Sudan stretches from the Sahara to the Sahel in northeastern Africa, threaded by the Nile on its long journey toward Egypt. The capital, Khartoum, rises at the meeting point of the Blue and White Niles. Home to the ancient Kingdom of Kush and its royal city of Meroë, Sudan holds a remarkable wealth of pyramids and temples, and its territory blends Arab and African cultures shaped by centuries of trans-Saharan trade.

• ·Sudan contains more ancient pyramids than Egypt, most of them royal Nubian tombs clustered at Meroë.
• ·The Kushite kings of what is now Sudan conquered Egypt and ruled it as pharaohs of the 25th dynasty.
• ·Until South Sudan seceded in 2011, Sudan was the largest country in Africa by area.
