About Ethiopia

Ethiopia dominates the Horn of Africa from its lofty highlands, often called the Roof of Africa. Its capital, Addis Ababa, is among the highest in the world and serves as the continent's diplomatic hub as headquarters of the African Union. Never fully colonized, Ethiopia nurtured its own script, calendar and church traditions across millennia, and its stretch of the Great Rift Valley has yielded some of humanity's oldest fossil ancestors.

  • Ethiopia's calendar has 13 months and runs about seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar.
  • The 3.2-million-year-old fossil skeleton Lucy, one of humanity's most famous ancestors, was unearthed in Ethiopia's Afar region.
  • Coffee is widely believed to have been first discovered in Ethiopia, whose Kaffa region may even have given the drink its name.
