About Libya

Libya spans a huge stretch of North Africa, where a narrow Mediterranean coastline quickly gives way to the vast emptiness of the Sahara. The capital, Tripoli, has been a port since Phoenician times, and spectacular Roman ruins at Leptis Magna and Sabratha line the shore. Inland, oasis towns and dramatic desert landscapes punctuate a territory that is overwhelmingly sand, gravel, and rock.

  • More than 90 percent of Libya is desert, and the country has no permanent natural rivers.
  • From 1977 to 2011 Libya flew a plain green banner, the only single-colored national flag with no design in modern history.
  • A 1922 temperature reading of 58 degrees Celsius near Tripoli was billed for 90 years as the world's hottest until meteorologists invalidated it in 2012.
