About Laos

Laos is Southeast Asia's only landlocked country, a realm of forested mountains, karst peaks, and slow rivers dominated by the Mekong. Its easygoing capital, Vientiane, sits right on the riverbank facing Thailand, while the former royal city of Luang Prabang preserves gilded temples. Heir to the medieval kingdom of Lan Xang, the 'Land of a Million Elephants,' Laos remains one of the region's most unhurried and least urbanized corners.

  • Vientiane sits directly on the Mekong River border with Thailand, one of the few national capitals located right on an international frontier.
  • The Plain of Jars in central Laos is scattered with thousands of giant stone jars carved some 2,000 years ago, and their exact purpose is still debated.
  • The name of the medieval Lao kingdom, Lan Xang, translates as 'Land of a Million Elephants.'
