About Vietnam

Vietnam curves like a letter S down the eastern edge of mainland Southeast Asia, squeezed between the mountains of Laos and the South China Sea. From its capital, Hanoi, in the fertile Red River Delta, the country stretches south past limestone karsts, terraced highlands, and a beach-lined coast to the maze-like Mekong Delta. Centuries of Chinese, French, and homegrown influences shaped its cuisine, pagodas, and famously energetic street life.

  • Hang Son Doong in central Vietnam is the largest known cave passage on Earth, big enough in places to hold a 40-story skyscraper.
  • Vietnamese traded Chinese-style characters for chu Quoc ngu, a Latin-based alphabet first devised by Portuguese missionaries in the 17th century.
  • Vietnam narrows to only about 50 kilometers wide at its slimmest point, even though the country stretches more than 1,600 kilometers from north to south.
