Vietnam curves like a letter S down the eastern edge of mainland Southeast Asia, squeezed between the mountains of Laos and the South China Sea. • ·Vietnamese traded Chinese-style characters for chu Quoc ngu, a Latin-based alphabet first devised by Portuguese missionaries in the 17th century.
• ·Vietnam narrows to only about 50 kilometers wide at its slimmest point, even though the country stretches more than 1,600 kilometers from north to south.
