Myanmar, also known as Burma, is the largest country in mainland Southeast Asia, stretching from Himalayan foothills to the Andaman Sea. Its purpose-built capital, Naypyidaw, replaced Yangon in 2005, though the former capital remains the largest city and home of the gilded Shwedagon Pagoda. The Irrawaddy River threads the country's heart, flowing past the ancient temple plain of Bagan with its thousands of pagodas.
