About Thailand

Thailand, known as Siam until 1939, occupies the heart of mainland Southeast Asia, curving from misty northern mountains down the Malay Peninsula. Bangkok, its exuberant capital on the Chao Phraya River, is famed for glittering temples and canal-side markets. Golden Buddhas, floating markets, tropical islands and a cuisine built on chilli, lime and lemongrass have made the kingdom one of the world's favourite destinations.

  • Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never colonised by a European power.
  • Bangkok's full ceremonial name runs to 168 letters and holds the Guinness record for the world's longest place name.
  • Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand gave its old name to Siamese cats and to the original 'Siamese twins', Chang and Eng Bunker.
