About Somalia

Somalia stretches along the Horn of Africa, wrapping around the continent's easternmost tip where the Gulf of Aden meets the Indian Ocean. Its capital, Mogadishu, has served as an Indian Ocean trading port for over a thousand years. A largely arid land of nomadic pastoralists, Somalia is bound together by clan, custom, and an oral culture so rich the country is often called a nation of poets.

  • Somalia has the longest coastline of any country on mainland Africa, stretching more than 3,000 kilometres.
  • Somalia is famed for its camels and is often said to have the largest camel population of any country.
  • Ancient Egyptians sourced frankincense and myrrh from the Horn of Africa, and some scholars place the fabled Land of Punt in present-day Somalia.
