About Uganda
Uganda rises from the papyrus shores of Lake Victoria in East Africa to the Rwenzori Mountains, the fabled 'Mountains of the Moon,' on its western border. Its capital, Kampala, sprawls across a cluster of hills near the lake. Lush, green and dense with birdlife, the country has long been celebrated as 'the Pearl of Africa.'
- The Nile begins its long journey to the Mediterranean at Jinja, where the river flows out of Lake Victoria in southern Uganda.
- Uganda's flag and coat of arms both feature the grey crowned crane, the country's elegant national bird.
- The equator crosses southern Uganda, and roadside markers let visitors stand with one foot in each hemisphere.
