About Rwanda

Rwanda, nicknamed the Land of a Thousand Hills, folds itself over ridge after emerald ridge in the highlands of East-Central Africa. Kigali, the capital, spreads across several of those hills near the country's center. Volcanic peaks in the north shelter mountain gorillas, while Lake Kivu forms the western frontier of this compact, densely cultivated country famed for its tidy towns and tea terraces.

  • In 2008 Rwanda became the first country in the world where women held a majority of seats in the national parliament.
  • Rwanda banned plastic bags in 2008, and arriving travelers can have them confiscated at the border.
  • On the last Saturday of each month, Rwandans take part in umuganda, a nationwide morning of community work.
