About Russia

Russia is the largest country on Earth, sweeping from the Baltic shores of Europe across the Ural Mountains and the whole of Siberian Asia to the Pacific. Its capital, Moscow, is anchored by the red-walled Kremlin beside the Moskva River. Taiga forests, Arctic tundra, open steppe, and the deepest lake on the planet all fall within its immense borders.

  • Russia spans eleven time zones, the most of any contiguous country; only France, counting its overseas territories, observes more.
  • Lake Baikal in Siberia is the world's deepest lake and holds roughly one-fifth of the planet's unfrozen surface fresh water.
  • Russia's Big Diomede Island sits about four kilometers from Alaska's Little Diomede, with the International Date Line running between the two.
