About Estonia

Estonia is the northernmost of Europe's Baltic states, facing Finland across the narrow Gulf of Finland. Its capital, Tallinn, pairs a fairy-tale medieval core with a reputation as one of the continent's most digitally advanced cities. Roughly half the country is forest, and its Finno-Ugric language and beloved song-festival tradition set it apart from its Indo-European-speaking neighbors.

  • Estonia counts more than 2,000 islands and islets, though the vast majority are uninhabited.
  • In 2005 Estonia became the first country in the world to use legally binding internet voting in a nationwide election, its local polls that October.
  • Tallinn's medieval Old Town, guarded by towers with names like Fat Margaret, is among Europe's best preserved and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
