North Korea occupies the northern half of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia, bordered by China and Russia along the Yalu and Tumen rivers and separated from South Korea by the Demilitarized Zone. Its capital, Pyongyang, sits on the Taedong River. The country's terrain is largely mountainous, rising to the volcanic crater lake of Mount Paektu, a peak woven into Korean founding legend.
