The Republic of the Congo lies on the Equator in Central Africa, its dense rainforests forming part of the vast Congo Basin, the world's second-largest tropical forest. Its capital, Brazzaville, stands on the north bank of the mighty Congo River, gazing directly across the water at Kinshasa. A former French colony often called Congo-Brazzaville, the country pairs oil-rich coastline with some of Africa's most pristine wilderness.
