About Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast stretches from the Gulf of Guinea's palm-lined shores into the savannas of West Africa. Its official capital, Yamoussoukro, is a planned city of grand boulevards, though the bustling port of Abidjan remains the commercial heart. Named for a once-thriving ivory trade, the country today is better known for cocoa, coffee, and a musical culture whose rhythms echo across the region.

  • Yamoussoukro is the official capital, but most embassies and much of the government's business remain in Abidjan, the country's largest city.
  • The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, inspired by St. Peter's in Rome, is listed by Guinness World Records as the largest church in the world.
  • Since 1986 the government has insisted the country be called Cote d'Ivoire in every language, rather than translations such as Ivory Coast.
