About Guinea

Guinea curves from West Africa's Atlantic coast through the Fouta Djallon highlands to forested uplands. Often called the region's water tower, it gives rise to great rivers including the Niger, the Senegal and the Gambia. The capital, Conakry, stretches along a narrow peninsula into the ocean, while inland the country holds vast mineral wealth, most famously some of the planet's richest deposits of bauxite.

• ·Guinea holds some of the world's largest reserves of bauxite, the ore from which aluminium is made.
• ·The capital, Conakry, grew from tiny Tombo Island and now stretches along the slender Kaloum Peninsula into the Atlantic.
• ·The country is often called Guinea-Conakry, after its capital, to distinguish it from Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.
