About Guyana

Guyana perches on South America's northern shoulder, yet its heart beats to a Caribbean rhythm. Dense rainforest blankets most of the country, hiding tepui plateaus and the mighty Kaieteur Falls, while the population clusters along the Atlantic coast. The capital, Georgetown, famous for wooden colonial architecture, shelters behind a long seawall. It is the continent's only country with English as the official language.

  • Kaieteur Falls plunges about 226 metres in a single drop — more than four times the height of Niagara Falls.
  • Much of the capital, Georgetown, lies below sea level at high tide, protected by a long seawall and drainage canals begun under Dutch rule.
  • The name Guyana comes from an Indigenous word usually translated as 'land of many waters'.
