Venezuela crowns the northern coast of South America, its Caribbean shoreline backed by Andean peaks, vast plains and the table mountains of the Guiana Highlands. The capital, Caracas, fills a narrow valley beneath the green wall of the Ávila mountain range. The Orinoco River threads the country's interior, and its landscapes span everything from cloud forest to desert dunes.

• ·The name Venezuela is often traced to 'little Venice,' reportedly coined when European explorers saw stilt houses along Lake Maracaibo.
