About Suriname

Suriname, on South America's northeastern shoulder, is the continent's smallest sovereign state and among its least known. The capital, Paramaribo, preserves a UNESCO-listed old town of white wooden Dutch colonial buildings beside the Suriname River. Behind the narrow coastal strip, rainforest blankets the overwhelming majority of the country, and its people, of Indian, Javanese, African, Chinese, Indigenous, and European descent, make it one of the most culturally varied corners of the Americas.

• ·Suriname is the only sovereign nation in the Americas where Dutch is the official language.
• ·Under the 1667 Treaty of Breda, the Dutch kept Suriname while England took New Amsterdam, the future New York City.
