Landlocked between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers in southern Africa, Zimbabwe takes its name from Great Zimbabwe, the medieval stone city whose ruins still stand in its southeast. The capital, Harare, spreads across a highveld plateau known for jacaranda-lined avenues. Elephants roam Hwange's woodlands, houseboats drift on Lake Kariba, and the Zambezi plunges over Victoria Falls along the northwestern border with Zambia.
