About South Africa
South Africa spans the continent's southern tip, from Kalahari semi-desert to the vineyards and beaches of the Cape around Cape Town. Nicknamed the Rainbow Nation for its many peoples and languages, the country entirely encircles the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. Its landscapes range from wildlife-rich savannas and gold-bearing highlands to the flat-topped icon of Table Mountain.
- South Africa has three capital cities: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative), and Bloemfontein (judicial).
- The Cape Floral Region is the smallest yet one of the richest of the world's floral kingdoms, with thousands of plant species found nowhere else.
- The Vredefort crater in South Africa is the largest verified impact crater on Earth, formed about two billion years ago.
