Türkiye bridges Europe and Asia, its land split by the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits. The capital is Ankara, high on the Anatolian plateau, though Istanbul — once Byzantium, later Constantinople — remains the largest and most storied city. Heir to Hittite, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilisations, the country stretches from Aegean beaches to the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia and the slopes of Mount Ararat.

• ·Istanbul straddles two continents, its neighbourhoods split between Europe and Asia by the Bosporus strait.
• ·Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Türkiye is around 11,000 years old, predating Stonehenge by some 6,000 years.
