About Armenia

Armenia is a mountainous, landlocked country in the South Caucasus, where Europe and Asia blur together. Its capital, Yerevan, built largely of rosy volcanic tuff, is nicknamed the Pink City and looks out toward snow-capped Mount Ararat. Heir to one of the world's oldest Christian cultures, Armenia treasures its ancient monasteries, its unique alphabet, and traditions of stone-carving, apricots, and brandy.

  • Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion, traditionally dated to the year 301.
  • Yerevan, founded as the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC, is older than Rome.
  • Mount Ararat, Armenia's national symbol depicted on its coat of arms, actually stands across the border in Türkiye.
