Saudi Arabia covers about four-fifths of the Arabian Peninsula, a realm of vast deserts, ancient lava fields, and Red Sea coral coasts in southwestern Asia. Riyadh, the capital, rises from the Najd plateau at the country's center. As the birthplace of Islam and guardian of its holiest cities, the kingdom draws millions of pilgrims, while its interior holds the great sand sea of the Empty Quarter.
