About Jordan

Jordan occupies a crossroads of the Middle East, wedged between desert plateaus and the Jordan River valley in western Asia. Its capital, Amman, spreads across steep hills that have been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Largely desert yet extraordinarily rich in history, Jordan holds the carved rock city of Petra, the otherworldly sands of Wadi Rum, and the shores of the intensely salty Dead Sea.

• ·Jordan's capital, Amman, was known as Philadelphia in Greek and Roman times, long before the American city existed.
• ·The shore of the Dead Sea, shared by Jordan, is the lowest dry land on Earth, lying more than 400 metres below sea level.
• ·Jordan's entire coastline runs only about 26 kilometres, all of it along the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea.
