About Pakistan

Pakistan stretches from the Arabian Sea to some of the highest mountains on Earth, where the Karakoram, Hindu Kush, and Himalaya ranges converge in southern Asia. Its planned capital, Islamabad, was built in the 1960s at the foot of the Margalla Hills. The Indus River, cradle of one of humanity's earliest urban civilizations, runs the country's length and irrigates its agricultural heartland.

• ·The name Pakistan, meaning 'land of the pure', was coined in the 1930s partly as an acronym of Punjab, Afghania, Kashmir, Sindh, and Baluchistan.
• ·Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, cities of the 4,500-year-old Indus Valley Civilization, are among the world's earliest planned urban settlements.
• ·Most pink 'Himalayan' salt actually comes from Pakistan's Khewra mine in the Salt Range of Punjab, one of the largest salt mines in the world.
