Afghanistan is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Central and South Asia, its rugged terrain dominated by the snow-capped Hindu Kush. From its capital, Kabul, trade routes of the ancient Silk Road once fanned out toward Persia, India, and China, making the country a meeting point of empires, languages, and faiths for more than two millennia. Its valleys are famed for pomegranates, grapes, and lapis lazuli.

• ·Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor, a narrow mountain panhandle, was drawn in the 1890s as a buffer between the Russian and British empires and touches China.
• ·Lapis lazuli from Afghanistan's Badakhshan mines has been prized for millennia and even adorns the funeral mask of Egypt's Tutankhamun.
• ·Afghanistan's national sport, buzkashi, is a horseback game in which riders compete for control of a goat or calf carcass.
