About North Macedonia

North Macedonia is a landlocked country in the central Balkans of southeastern Europe, its capital Skopje straddling the Vardar River beneath an ancient hilltop fortress. Lake Ohrid glitters on the Albanian border, medieval monasteries dot the mountains, and old bazaars recall centuries of Ottoman rule. The country adopted its current name in 2019, resolving a long-running dispute with neighbouring Greece.

  • Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, now the capital of North Macedonia, in 1910.
  • Lake Ohrid, shared by North Macedonia and Albania, is one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes and shelters species found nowhere else.
  • The clock on Skopje's old railway station is frozen at 5:17, the moment a devastating earthquake struck the city in July 1963.
