About Albania

Albania sits on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, where the Adriatic and Ionian seas wash a coastline known as the Albanian Riviera. Its capital, Tirana, is famous for buildings painted in bold colors and playful patterns. Long isolated during the twentieth century, the country is home to a distinct branch of the Indo-European language family and a proud mountain heritage.

• ·In 1967 Albania declared itself the world's first officially atheist state, banning all religious practice until 1990.
