About Benin

Benin stretches north from West Africa's palm-fringed Bight of Benin into savanna, a slender country steeped in history. It was home to the Kingdom of Dahomey, famed for its formidable all-female regiments, and it is celebrated as a cradle of the Vodun religion. Porto-Novo is the official capital, though much government business happens in the larger port city of Cotonou.

• ·Vodun (voodoo) is an officially recognized religion in Benin, celebrated with a national public holiday every January.
• ·Benin was known as Dahomey until 1975; its new name comes from the Bight of Benin, itself named for a historic kingdom in present-day Nigeria.
