About Slovenia

Wedged between the Alps and the Adriatic, Slovenia packs mountains, karst caves, vineyards, and a short but scenic coastline into a compact corner of Central Europe. Its capital, Ljubljana, is a leafy university city watched over by a hilltop castle and guarded, in legend, by dragons. Forests cover well over half the country, and its Karst plateau gave the world the very word for such limestone landscapes.

  • Slovenia's Predjama Castle, wedged into a cliffside cave mouth, is recognised as the largest cave castle in the world.
  • The olm, a blind cave salamander once mistaken for a baby dragon, lives in Slovenia's caves and can survive for around a century.
  • Ljubljana's emblem is a dragon, celebrated on the city's Dragon Bridge and linked in legend to Jason and the Argonauts.
