About Slovakia
Slovakia occupies the heart of Central Europe, rising from the Danube lowlands to the alpine peaks of the High Tatras. Its capital, Bratislava, hugs the river near the borders of Austria and Hungary. Independent since the amicable 1993 'Velvet Divorce' from the Czechs, Slovakia is a land of medieval castles, wooden churches, and thousands of karst caves.
- Bratislava is the only national capital that directly borders two sovereign countries, Austria and Hungary.
- Bratislava and Vienna, about 55 kilometres apart, are the two closest capital cities in the European Union.
- Slovakia's High Tatras include Gerlachovský štít, at 2,655 metres the highest peak in the entire Carpathian range.
