About Seychelles

Scattered across the western Indian Ocean off East Africa, the Seychelles comprises some 115 islands of granite peaks and coral atolls. The capital, Victoria, on the main island of Mahé, is among the smallest capital cities in the world. Fragments of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana, the inner islands harbour plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth, making the archipelago a byword for tropical seclusion.

  • The Seychelles' coco de mer palm bears the heaviest seed of any plant, a giant double coconut that can top 15 kilograms.
  • Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles shelters one of the largest populations of giant tortoises on Earth.
  • The Seychelles has the smallest population of any sovereign African country.
