About São Tomé and Príncipe
Sao Tome and Principe scatters two lush volcanic islands and several islets across the Gulf of Guinea off Central Africa's coast. The capital, Sao Tome, overlooks a bay on the larger island's northeast shore. Uninhabited until Portuguese navigators arrived in the fifteenth century, the islands were carved into plantation estates and are now celebrated for endemic birds and dramatic jungle peaks.
- After Seychelles, Sao Tome and Principe is Africa's second-smallest country by area.
- The equator crosses Ilheu das Rolas, a small islet just off the southern tip of Sao Tome island.
- In the early twentieth century the islands were the world's leading cocoa producer, earning the nickname the Chocolate Islands.
