About Samoa
Samoa lies at the heart of Polynesia in the South Pacific, its two main volcanic islands, Upolu and Savai'i, wrapped in rainforest and ringed by coral reefs. Apia, the capital, faces a natural harbor on Upolu's north coast. Village life still follows fa'a Samoa, the traditional Samoan way, with open-sided fale houses and communal land tenure at its core.
- Samoa skipped December 30, 2011 entirely, hopping across the International Date Line to align its calendar with Australia and New Zealand.
- In 2009 Samoa switched from driving on the right to driving on the left, one of very few countries ever to make that change.
- Writer Robert Louis Stevenson spent his final years in Samoa and is buried on Mount Vaea overlooking Apia.
