About Saint Lucia
Saint Lucia rises steeply from the eastern Caribbean, its volcanic spine culminating in the Pitons, twin peaks that plunge straight into the sea near Soufriere. The capital, Castries, wraps around a sheltered harbor in the island's northwest. Fought over repeatedly by Britain and France, the island blends both legacies in its Creole language, cuisine, and place names.
- Saint Lucia is named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse, making it one of the very few countries in the world named after a woman.
- Saint Lucia changed hands between Britain and France fourteen times, earning it the nickname Helen of the West Indies.
- The island's two Nobel laureates, economist Arthur Lewis and poet Derek Walcott, were both born in Castries on January 23.
