About Saint Kitts and Nevis

Saint Kitts and Nevis pairs two volcanic islands in the northern Lesser Antilles, separated by a strait known simply as The Narrows. Basseterre, the capital, sits on the Caribbean side of the larger island, St. Kitts. Sugar estates once blanketed both islands; today rainforest-clad peaks, beaches of black and golden sand, and the mighty Brimstone Hill fortress define this smallest of Western Hemisphere nations.

  • Nevis takes its name from the Spanish Nuestra Senora de las Nieves, Our Lady of the Snows, inspired by the white clouds crowning its peak.
  • Alexander Hamilton, the first US Treasury Secretary and the face of the ten-dollar bill, was born on Nevis.
  • Brimstone Hill Fortress on St. Kitts, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was nicknamed the Gibraltar of the West Indies.
