About Panama
Panama occupies the narrow isthmus that stitches North and South America together, a slender S-shaped country between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Its capital, Panama City, pairs colonial quarters with a gleaming skyline overlooking the canal's Pacific entrance. The Panama Canal, an engineering landmark cut through rainforest and mountain, made this small Central American nation one of the great crossroads of world trade.
- Because Panama's isthmus bends into an S-shape, in parts of the country the sun appears to rise over the Pacific and set over the Atlantic.
- The Darien Gap on Panama's border with Colombia is the only break in the Pan-American Highway between Alaska and the tip of South America.
- Despite the name, the classic Panama hat is actually woven in Ecuador; it earned its label from workers and travelers passing through Panama.
