About Nepal

Nepal is a Himalayan nation in South Asia, sandwiched between India and China and crowned by Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. Its capital, Kathmandu, brims with pagoda temples, royal squares, and Buddhist stupas. From steamy lowland jungles where tigers and rhinos roam to the icy summits of the high Himalaya, few countries pack such extremes of altitude into so small an area.

  • Nepal is the only country whose national flag is not a quadrilateral; it is shaped as two stacked pennants.
  • Eight of the world's fourteen peaks above 8,000 metres, including Mount Everest, lie wholly or partly in Nepal.
  • Nepal's clocks are set to UTC+5:45, one of the world's very few 45-minute time-zone offsets.
