About Mauritius

Mauritius rises from the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, a volcanic island ringed by coral reefs and edged with sugarcane fields. Its capital, Port Louis, blends Indian, African, Chinese, and European influences into one of the region's most diverse societies. Once the only home of the dodo, the island had no human inhabitants until the seventeenth century and is now celebrated for beaches, mountains, and multicultural cuisine.

  • The dodo lived only on Mauritius before going extinct in the 17th century, and the flightless bird still appears on the country's coat of arms.
  • Off Mauritius's Le Morne peninsula, sand and ocean currents create the illusion of a dramatic 'underwater waterfall' visible from the air.
  • Mauritius's flag, nicknamed 'Les Quatre Bandes,' is the only national flag made up solely of four equal horizontal stripes: red, blue, yellow, and green.
