About Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is an Alpine microstate wedged between Switzerland and Austria in the heart of Europe, stretching barely 25 kilometers along the Rhine valley. Its capital, Vaduz, is watched over by the hilltop castle of the princely family that gives the country its name. One of the world's smallest and wealthiest nations, Liechtenstein pairs mountain scenery with an outsized role in finance and precision manufacturing.

  • Liechtenstein is one of only two doubly landlocked countries on Earth, along with Uzbekistan — all of its neighbors are themselves landlocked.
  • At the 1936 Olympics Liechtenstein discovered its flag was identical to Haiti's, so it added a golden crown the following year.
  • Liechtenstein has had no standing army since it was disbanded in 1868.
