About Iceland

Iceland rises from the North Atlantic just below the Arctic Circle, a volcanic island of glaciers, geysers, hot springs, and lava fields. Its capital, Reykjavik, whose name means 'smoky bay,' is warmed largely by geothermal energy. Settled by Norse seafarers in the ninth century, this European nation maintains one of the world's oldest parliamentary traditions and a literary heritage stretching back to the medieval sagas.

  • Iceland's parliament, the Althingi, was founded in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest surviving parliaments in the world.
  • Reykjavik is the world's northernmost capital of a sovereign state.
  • Iceland straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, so parts of the country sit on the North American tectonic plate and parts on the Eurasian plate.
