About Cape Verde

Cape Verde, or Cabo Verde, is a horseshoe of ten volcanic islands scattered in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa. Uninhabited until Portuguese navigators arrived in the fifteenth century, the archipelago became a crossroads of African and European cultures, producing a distinctive Creole language and the soulful morna music. The capital, Praia, spreads across a plateau on Santiago, the largest island.

  • Cape Verde is named after Cap-Vert in Senegal, the westernmost point of mainland Africa, rather than for the islands' own greenery.
  • Pico do Fogo, an active volcano, is Cape Verde's highest point, and villagers farm inside the caldera at its foot.
  • Morna, the melancholic music style made world-famous by Cesaria Evora, is Cape Verde's signature genre and is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
