Bhutan clings to the eastern Himalayas between towering peaks and subtropical valleys, a Buddhist kingdom in South Asia that long kept the outside world at arm's length. Its capital, Thimphu, mixes monastic tradition with cautious modernity, and national policy famously prioritizes Gross National Happiness over raw economic output. Known to its people as Druk Yul, the Land of the Thunder Dragon, Bhutan drapes its cliffs with fortress-monasteries called dzongs.

• ·Thimphu is famous for having no traffic lights — white-gloved police direct cars from ornate booths, and a signal installed in 1995 was removed within a day.
• ·Bhutan's Gangkhar Puensum is widely considered the world's highest unclimbed mountain, as climbing its high peaks is forbidden.
