About Belize

Belize pairs Caribbean coastline with dense rainforest on the eastern flank of Central America, its era as British Honduras still echoing in colonial-era buildings and everyday life. Offshore stretch a spectacular barrier reef and the Great Blue Hole; inland, ancient Maya cities rise from the jungle. The capital, Belmopan, was purpose-built inland after a hurricane battered coastal Belize City.

  • Belize is the only country in Central America with English as its official language.
  • The Great Blue Hole off Belize, a marine sinkhole roughly 300 meters across, was made world-famous by explorer Jacques Cousteau.
  • Belize's flag is one of very few national flags to feature human figures, showing two woodcutters on its coat of arms.
